Console War: Is It Finally Over?

Author : Nicholas Update:Apr 10,2025

The age-old debate between PlayStation and Xbox has been a staple of the video game world for decades. Whether you've engaged in heated discussions with friends, started a Reddit thread, or created a TikTok video on the topic, you've likely been part of this conversation. While some gamers swear by PC gaming or are devoted to Nintendo, the rivalry between Sony and Microsoft has shaped much of the video game industry's recent history. However, with the rapid evolution of the gaming landscape, including the rise of handheld gaming and the tech-savvy younger generations, the traditional 'console war' has transformed. Has a clear winner emerged? The answer might surprise you.

The video game industry has grown into a financial powerhouse, with global revenue reaching $285 billion in 2019 and soaring to $475 billion in 2023. This figure surpasses the combined earnings of the global movie and music industries, which totaled $308 billion and $28.6 billion respectively in 2023. The industry is projected to hit nearly $700 billion by 2029, a testament to its explosive growth from its humble beginnings with games like Pong.

This lucrative market has attracted Hollywood stars like Mads Mikkelsen, Keanu Reeves, Jon Bernthal, and Willem Dafoe, who have all featured in video games over the past five years. Their involvement underscores the shifting perception of video games as a mainstream entertainment medium. Even giants like Disney are making significant moves into gaming, with a $1.5 billion investment in Epic Games during Bob Iger's second term, aiming to establish a strong gaming presence. However, not all companies are riding this wave of success, particularly Microsoft's Xbox division.

Xbox Series X and S consoles

The Xbox Series X and S were designed to be a significant upgrade over the Xbox One, yet they have struggled to capture the market. The Xbox One outsells the Series X/S by nearly double, and according to Mat Piscatella from Circana, the current console generation may have already peaked in sales. In 2024, the Xbox Series X/S sold less than 2.5 million units throughout the year, while the PlayStation 5 sold the same number in just the first quarter. Rumors of Xbox potentially closing its physical game distribution department and pulling out of the EMEA region further suggest a retreat from the console market.

Microsoft has seemingly acknowledged defeat in the console war. During the Activision-Blizzard acquisition, Microsoft admitted that it never believed it could win the console war. With the Xbox Series X/S struggling to match the sales of its predecessor and Microsoft's focus shifting, the company is pivoting away from traditional console manufacturing.

Xbox Game Pass has become a central focus for Microsoft, with leaked documents revealing the high costs of adding AAA titles like Grand Theft Auto 5 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor to the service. Microsoft's 'This Is An Xbox' campaign emphasizes a shift from being just a console to an accessible gaming service. Rumors of an Xbox handheld and plans for a mobile game store to compete with Apple and Google indicate Microsoft's new direction: making Xbox a brand you can play anytime, anywhere.

Mobile gaming statistics

Microsoft's pivot is driven by the dominance of mobile gaming. In 2024, out of 3.3 billion gamers worldwide, 1.93 billion play on mobile devices. Mobile gaming has become the leading segment of the video game market, especially among Gen Z and Gen Alpha, with a market valuation of $92.5 billion in 2024, half of the industry's total $184.3 billion. Console gaming, in contrast, accounts for just $50.3 billion, a 4% drop from the previous year.

The rise of mobile gaming isn't a new trend. By 2013, mobile gaming in Asia was already outpacing the West, with South Korea and China leading the charge. Games like Puzzle & Dragon and Candy Crush Saga out-earned GTA 5 in 2013, and throughout the 2010s, mobile titles like Crossfire, Monster Strike, Honor of Kings, Puzzle & Dragon, and Clash of Clans were among the highest-grossing games.

While mobile gaming dominates, PC gaming has also seen significant growth, with an increase of 59 million players annually since 2014, reaching 1.86 billion in 2024. Despite this, the PC gaming market's value of $41.5 billion in 2024 still lags behind consoles by $9 billion, suggesting a complex landscape for Xbox, which has heavily invested in Windows PCs.

PlayStation 5 sales

On the other side of the console war, Sony's PlayStation 5 has been a resounding success, with 65 million units sold to date, far outpacing the 29.7 million combined sales of the Xbox Series X/S. Sony's Game and Network Services reported a 12.3% profit increase, driven by strong sales of first-party titles like Astro Bot and Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut. Projections suggest Sony will sell 106.9 million PS5s by 2029, while Microsoft expects to sell between 56-59 million Xbox Series X/S units by 2027. With Xbox titles potentially coming to PlayStation and Switch, Sony appears to be the current king of consoles.

However, the PS5's success is not without its challenges. Half of PlayStation users still play on PS4s, and of the top 20 best-selling games in the U.S. in 2024, only Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a true PS5 exclusive. With only about 15 genuine PS5-exclusive games available, many question the console's $500 price tag. The $700 PS5 Pro received mixed reviews, with many feeling the upgrade came too early in the console's lifecycle. The upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6 later this year could be the game-changer the PS5 needs to showcase its full potential.

So, is the console war over? Microsoft seems to have conceded defeat, while Sony's PS5, though successful, has yet to fully justify its leap forward. The real winners appear to be those who have embraced mobile gaming, which is increasingly becoming central to the industry's future. With companies like Tencent rumored to be acquiring Ubisoft and mobile gaming driving significant revenue, the next chapter of gaming will likely focus less on hardware and more on cloud gaming and accessibility. The console war may be over, but the mobile gaming war is just beginning.
