Civ VII Patch 1.0.1 Fixes Early Access Issues

Author : Owen Update:Mar 12,2025

Firaxis Games, the developer behind Civilization VII, has released patch 1.0.1, timed perfectly with the strategy game's full launch following a period of early access. This launch, however, followed a “mixed” user review rating on Steam.

Firaxis is actively addressing community concerns, primarily focused on the user interface, limited map variety, and a perceived lack of key features expected by long-time fans.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, in an interview with IGN prior to their third-quarter financial results announcement, acknowledged the negative press and player feedback surrounding Civilization VII. However, he expressed confidence that the game's appeal to the established Civilization fanbase would grow with increased playtime, describing the early performance as "very encouraging."

With Civilization VII now available to all players, not just early access participants, Firaxis has released Patch 2 (PC/Mac/Linux/Steam Deck). Announced on Steam, this patch is the first in a series designed to incorporate player feedback gathered during the early access period. The complete patch notes are detailed below.

It’s important to note that Firaxis has temporarily disabled cross-play multiplayer to streamline PC updates. This means PC patches may be released at a different pace than console patches; Patch 1.0.1 is a prime example. However, this change only affects cross-play between PC and console players; console-to-console and PC-to-PC multiplayer remain unaffected.

Civilization 7 1.0.1 Patch 2 - February 10, 2025

Gameplay (Windows PC/Mac/Linux/Steam Deck)

  • Fixed an issue causing shorter-than-intended Ages in Epic and Marathon speed games.
  • City-States will now become Friendly Independent Powers during Age Transitions instead of disappearing. They will also start with more units in the Exploration and Modern Ages.
  • Addressed inconsistencies in Naval Combat:
    • Naval Units will now use correct Combat Strength values when attacking other Naval Units.
    • Naval Units will receive reciprocal damage correctly after attacking.
    • Naval Units will move to the attacked tile more consistently after winning combat.
  • Completing the final Legacy Path milestone no longer grants Age Progress in the Modern Age, allowing more time for victory completion.
  • Towns will automatically switch focus back to growth if their chosen focus becomes ineligible (e.g., population decrease).
  • The Future Civic is now repeatable in all Ages. The cost of Future Tech and Future Civic will increase more with each repetition.
  • Fixed an issue where excessive growth bonuses resulted in negative food requirements for the next growth event.
  • Improved Rail Networks to increase reliability of Settlements connecting to the network over water via Ports. This applies if the Capital has a Port or is connected by rail to a settlement with a Port.
  • Improved the Loyalty Crisis in the Antiquity Age, including the ability to purchase Villas in towns during the crisis to manage happiness.

A note about cross-play multiplayer: To expedite PC updates, patches will sometimes be deployed at a different pace than on consoles—including today's Patch 1.0.1. Therefore, cross-play between PC and console players is temporarily disabled. Console-to-console and PC-to-PC multiplayer remain unaffected.

AI (Windows PC/Mac/Linux/Steam Deck)

  • AI will offer high-value Cities less frequently during Peace Deals.
  • In the Modern Age, AI will declare war less often at the start of the age.
  • In the Modern Age, AI will consider Ideology more before declaring war or offering peace.
  • Other Leaders will have a decreased desire for war if neither party has an Ideology.
  • Other Leaders will have an increased desire for war with players of opposing ideologies.
  • Other Leaders will have a decreased desire for peace with players of opposing ideologies.

Camera (Windows PC/Mac/Linux/Steam Deck)

  • Fixed an issue on native resolutions where the camera focused on the map's lower end when clicking the minimap.

UI (Windows PC/Mac/Linux/Steam Deck)

  • Replaced the Simplified Chinese font with the font from Civilization VI while working on improvements for future patches.
  • Fixed an issue preventing the Settlement menu from opening when clicking a non-player's Settlement Banner.
  • Fixed an issue where yield icons didn't appear on buildings after town conversion to city.
  • Fixed an issue where text was cut off on the Global Yields Breakdown screen.
  • Added notifications for completed Espionage actions.
  • City projects no longer appear purchasable.
  • Your current religion is now displayed first in the belief picker tabs.
  • Fixed an issue where a District’s health bar remained on-screen after healing.
  • Fixed an issue where Leaders lacked portraits after relationship changes during gameplay.
  • Improved alignment of leader names and portraits on the Age Summary (Victories Rankings Overview screen).
  • Fixed an issue where the background color remained default despite user changes in the Player Customize tab.
  • Improved spacing between Civ descriptions, unique units, and building icons on the loading screen.
