Warner Bros. Cancels Wonder Woman Game, Closes Three Studios

Author : Jason Update:Mar 16,2025

Warner Bros. is shutting down three game studios—Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB San Diego—and canceling its planned Wonder Woman game, according to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier. Schreier initially broke the news on Bluesky, followed by a detailed report on Bloomberg. WB Games subsequently confirmed the closures to Kotaku, stating the decision is a strategic shift focusing development on key franchises like Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC, and Game of Thrones. The statement emphasized this isn't a reflection on the talent within the affected studios.

The cancellation of Monolith Productions' Wonder Woman game is attributed to the strategic shift, despite the studio's history of creating successful titles and the potential for a high-quality Wonder Woman experience. WB Games expressed admiration for the teams' dedication and thanked employees for their contributions. The company aims to return to profitability and growth by 2025.

This news follows earlier reports of trouble surrounding the Wonder Woman game, including reboots and director changes in early 2024. These issues coincided with broader challenges for WB Games, including layoffs at Rocksteady, mixed reception for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and the closure of MultiVersus. Recent events include the departure of long-time games head David Haddad and rumors of a potential sale of the division.

The closures represent a significant setback for WB's DC universe gaming ambitions, especially considering James Gunn and Peter Safran's recent announcement that the first DCU video game is still a couple of years away.

The industry loses three established studios. Monolith Productions, founded in 1994 and acquired by WB in 2004, is known for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel, which pioneered the Nemesis system (patented by WB in 2021). Player First Games (founded 2019) developed MultiVersus, which, despite critical acclaim and initial success, fell short of expectations. WB San Diego (also founded 2019) focused on mobile, free-to-play games.

These closures reflect a wider trend in the games industry over the past three years, marked by increasing layoffs, project cancellations, and studio closures. While 2023 and 2024 saw significant job losses (estimated at over 10,000 and 14,000 respectively), precise figures for 2025 are less clear due to reduced reporting of such events.
