The 2011 remake of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary: A Bold Gamble That Paid Off
Saber Interactive, then an independent studio, made a daring move: offering to develop the Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary remake for free. This audacious strategy, detailed in an interview with journalist Stephen Totilo, aimed for invaluable exposure within the gaming industry. CEO Matthew Karch believed the prestige of working on such a globally recognized franchise would outweigh the financial loss. "It’s like putting a Harvard diploma on your wall," he stated, highlighting the potential for future opportunities.
While initially proposing a $4 million budget to Microsoft, contractual clauses ultimately resulted in zero royalties for Saber. Despite this initial financial setback, the experience proved pivotal. The studio's involvement in the remake opened doors to further collaborations with Microsoft, including contributing to Halo: The Master Chief Collection alongside industry giants like Bungie and 343 Industries. Crucially, Saber negotiated the removal of the unfavorable royalty clauses from the contract for the Xbox One port of Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, receiving a substantial, multi-million dollar payment for their contribution to the collection.
This financial windfall fueled Saber Interactive's growth. The company expanded globally, establishing new studios and acquiring others like Binary Motion and New World Interactive. They secured high-profile projects, including the Nintendo Switch port of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and the development of World War Z.
Following its acquisition by Embracer Group in 2020 and subsequent sale to Beacon Interactive (owned by Karch), Saber Interactive continues its success. Despite the change in ownership, the company remains committed to its ongoing projects, including Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 (released September 2024), John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, and Jurassic Park: Survival. The Halo gamble proved a masterstroke, transforming a small independent studio into a major player in the gaming world.
