NIS America Accelerates Western Releases of Trails and Ys Series
Good news for fans of Falcom's acclaimed Trails and Ys RPG franchises! NIS America, the Western publisher, has pledged to significantly reduce the wait times for future releases. This commitment to faster localization was announced by Senior Associate Producer Alan Costa during the recent Ys X: Nordics digital showcase.
While Costa remained tight-lipped about the specifics of NIS America's internal improvements, he emphasized the company's dedication to quicker turnaround times. The upcoming releases of Ys X: Nordics (October) and Trails Through Daybreak II (early 2025) serve as examples of this accelerated process. The latter's release, despite its September 2022 Japanese launch, represents a considerable reduction in the typical release gap for Trails games.
Historically, Western fans have endured notoriously long waits. The Trails in the Sky series, for example, experienced a seven-year delay between its Japanese PC release (2004) and its eventual Western debut on PSP (2011). More recent titles like Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure faced even longer waits, taking twelve years to reach global audiences. This was largely attributed to the immense volume of text requiring translation, as highlighted by former XSEED Games Localization Manager Jessica Chavez in 2011.
While a two-to-three-year localization process remains the norm, NIS America prioritizes maintaining high-quality translations. Costa stressed the importance of balancing speed with accuracy, noting that the company is continually refining this balance.
The past challenges, including the year-long delay of Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana due to translation issues, underscore the potential pitfalls of rushing the process. However, the improved timeline for Trails Through Daybreak II, coupled with its positive reception, suggests a promising future for fans eager to experience these beloved JRPGs more promptly. The shorter wait times represent a significant step forward for NIS America, demonstrating their commitment to bringing high-quality localizations to Western audiences more efficiently.
