Nvidia's DLSS 4: 8X Performance Boost with Multi-Frame Generation
Nvidia has unveiled DLSS 4 at CES 2025, a significant leap forward in AI-powered upscaling technology, exclusively for the new GeForce RTX 50 Series. This groundbreaking update introduces Multi-Frame Generation (MFG), capable of generating up to three additional frames per rendered frame, resulting in an impressive 8X performance increase. This allows for 4K gaming at 240 FPS with full ray tracing enabled.
DLSS 4 builds upon the success of previous iterations, leveraging the power of Tensor Cores to upscale lower-resolution images to higher resolutions. This new version integrates transformer-based AI models for the first time in real-time graphics rendering, leading to superior image quality, enhanced temporal stability, and reduced visual artifacts. The technology also boasts a 30% reduction in VRAM usage.
Multi-Frame Generation: A Hardware and Software Synergy
The impressive performance gains of MFG are achieved through a combination of hardware and software advancements. New AI models accelerate frame generation by 40%, optimizing rendering processes and minimizing computational demands. Hardware improvements, including Flip Metering and upgraded Tensor Cores, ensure smooth frame pacing and high-resolution support. Games such as Warhammer 40,000: Darktide already showcase the benefits of these enhancements with improved frame rates and reduced memory usage. DLSS 4 also incorporates Ray Reconstruction and Super Resolution, further enhancing visual fidelity, especially in ray-traced scenes.
Backward Compatibility and Wide Game Support
Nvidia's commitment to backward compatibility ensures that both current and future RTX users can benefit from DLSS 4's advancements. At launch, 75 games and applications will support Multi-Frame Generation, with over 50 titles integrating the new transformer-based AI models. Major titles including Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2 will feature native support. An Override feature within the Nvidia app allows users to enable MFG and other enhancements for older DLSS integrations.
