The Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025 tournament has made a surprising announcement: chess, the ancient game of strategy, is officially joining the esports lineup! This groundbreaking move brings a centuries-old pastime into the modern world of competitive gaming.
Chess Crowned an Esport
A landmark partnership between Chess.com, chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) has made this historic inclusion possible. The EWC, the world's largest gaming and esports festival, will feature competitive chess for the very first time, exposing the game to a wider, more global audience.EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert expressed his excitement, calling chess "the ultimate strategy game." He believes its rich history, worldwide appeal, and vibrant competitive scene make it a perfect fit for the EWC's mission to unite diverse gaming communities.
Chess legend and current world number one, GM Magnus Carlsen, will serve as an ambassador, aiming to introduce chess to a new generation of fans. He stated, "This partnership offers an incredible opportunity to expand the game's reach and inspire future players."
Riyadh 2025: A $1.5 Million Showdown
The EWC 2025 event will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, boasting a massive $1.5 million prize pool. To qualify, players must first compete in the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT) in February and May. The top 12 CCT players, along with four "Last Chance Qualifier" winners, will battle for a $300,000 prize pool and a coveted spot in the EWC's inaugural chess competition.
To enhance the appeal for esports viewers, the 2025 CCT will feature a faster, more dynamic format. Matches will use a 10-minute time control with no increment, culminating in an Armageddon tiebreaker if necessary.
Chess, originating in ancient India over 1500 years ago, has captivated players for generations. Its digital evolution, fueled by platforms like Chess.com and popular culture (e.g., The Queen's Gambit), has broadened its appeal, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, its official recognition as an esport promises to attract even more players and fans worldwide.
