"Civ 7's 1.1.1 Update Struggles Against Civ 6 and 5 on Steam"

Author : Aiden Update:Apr 11,2025

Firaxis, the developer behind Civilization 7, has announced a significant update, version 1.1.1, amidst a backdrop of lower player counts on Steam compared to its predecessors. The latest installment in the iconic strategy series has seen a 24-hour peak of only 16,921 concurrent players, failing to crack Steam's top 100 most-played games. In contrast, the 15-year-old Civilization 5 boasted a higher 24-hour peak of 17,423 players, while Civilization 6, released in 2016, significantly outpaced both with 40,676 players in the same timeframe. It's evident that many Civilization enthusiasts are still loyal to Civilization 6.

In a detailed post on Steam, Firaxis highlighted the "additions and refinements" that players can expect in Update 1.1.1, including:

  • Quick Move Functionality
  • New Natural Wonder Mount Everest
  • Additional UI Updates & Polish
  • Settlement & Commander Renaming
  • And more!

Lead designer Ed Beach provided an in-depth walkthrough of these changes in a video, alongside the full patch notes, which are set to be released soon.

Civilization 7 Update 1.1.1 Patch Notes:

The Quick Move feature is now an optional setting that can be toggled in the game's menu, allowing for faster gameplay by enabling units to reach their destinations immediately.

A new start position option has been introduced for map generation. In single-player mode, the default setting is now 'Standard', mimicking the unpredictable continent variety seen in Civilization 6. Meanwhile, the 'Balanced' setting remains the default for multiplayer, ensuring a level playing field with more consistent maps.

Players can now rename settlements and commanders, adding a personal touch to their civilizations. Additionally, a restart feature allows players to regenerate the map with new seeds while keeping their chosen leader and civilization.

User interface improvements include persistent city and town panels when making purchases, new notifications for city attacks, indicators for crises, and enhanced resource tooltips. The update also brings significant pacing changes to enhance gameplay flow.

Alongside the update, a new paid content pack, the Crossroads of the World Collection, introduces Bulgaria as a playable civilization, alongside Nepal and a new leader, Simón Bolívar, available as of March 25.

Civilization 7 has sparked debate among series veterans due to its new mechanics, reflected in its 'mixed' user review rating on Steam and a 7/10 score from IGN. Despite the initial lukewarm reception, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick remains optimistic, suggesting that the "legacy Civ audience" will eventually embrace the game, describing its early performance as "very encouraging."
