Localthunk, the creator of the popular roguelike poker game Balatro, has recently addressed a controversy on the game's subreddit regarding AI-generated art. The issue arose when DrTankHead, a former moderator of the Balatro subreddit and current moderator of a related NSFW subreddit, stated that AI art would not be banned if properly labeled and tagged. This stance was reportedly taken after discussions with Playstack, Balatro's publisher.
Localthunk quickly clarified their position on Bluesky, emphasizing that neither they nor Playstack condone AI-generated art. They reiterated this stance in a detailed statement on the subreddit, affirming that AI art does not align with their values and can harm artists. As a result, DrTankHead was removed from the moderation team, and the subreddit will no longer allow AI-generated images. Localthunk promised to update the subreddit's rules and FAQ to reflect this policy.
Playstack's communications director acknowledged that the initial rule against "unlabeled AI content" may have been unclear, potentially leading to misunderstandings. The remaining moderators plan to refine the language to avoid future confusion.
DrTankHead, after their removal, posted on the NSFW Balatro subreddit, clarifying that they do not intend to make it AI-centric but are considering a designated day for AI-generated art posts.
This incident highlights the broader debate surrounding generative AI in the gaming and entertainment industries. Amid significant layoffs, AI's use has been criticized for ethical and rights issues, as well as its inability to produce engaging content. For example, Keywords Studios' attempt to create a game using AI failed, with the company admitting to investors that AI cannot replace human talent. Despite such setbacks, tech giants like EA and Capcom continue to invest heavily in AI, with EA describing it as central to their business and Capcom exploring its use for generating in-game ideas. Activision's use of AI for assets in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has also sparked controversy, particularly over an AI-generated zombie Santa loading screen.
