The Nintendo Switch 2 reveal this morning lends significant credence to the rumors of Joy-Con mouse functionality. The reveal trailer shows detached Joy-Cons placed attachment-side down onto a surface, connecting to what appear to be flat-bottomed connectors. These then smoothly slide across the surface, mimicking mouse movement on a mousepad. A slider pad is even visible on one connector, further supporting this theory.
Pre-reveal speculation centered on an internal Joy-Con sensor, similar to those in computer mice, enabling this functionality. While Nintendo hasn't officially confirmed this, the possibilities are exciting. Fans envision enhanced experiences for games like Civilization, traditionally better suited to mouse and keyboard controls. However, given Nintendo's innovative history, entirely new and unexpected applications within first-party software are equally plausible.
Despite the unknowns surrounding mouse support and the purpose of a new Joy-Con button, several details are confirmed: the system is officially called the Nintendo Switch 2, launching in 2025, and a new Mario Kart title is in development. Backward compatibility with the original Switch is also assured. Further software announcements are promised in an April Direct. For comprehensive Nintendo Switch 2 coverage, check here.
