The Nvidia RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 are set to launch on January 30th, but reports from retailers and manufacturers suggest significant shortages are likely. With consumers already lining up outside stores, the cards are anticipated to be highly sought-after despite their hefty price tags: $1,999 for the RTX 5090 and $999 for the RTX 5080.
Manufacturer MSI, citing the Lunar New Year, predicts initial low stock for the new GPUs, expecting supply to improve in February. This limited availability is echoed by several retailers. Overclockers UK reports receiving only a small number of RTX 5090 units, and similarly low stock of the RTX 5080. PowerGPU in the U.S. anticipates extremely limited availability for the RTX 5090.
In response to online concerns, Nvidia stated that they anticipate high demand and potential stock-outs, but assured consumers that they and their partners are working to increase retail supply daily.
Despite Nvidia's statement, the anticipated scarcity is already attracting scalpers. Pre-sale listings on eBay are showing inflated prices; one example shows an Asus ROG Astral RTX 5090 listed for $5,750—a staggering 187% markup.
Adding to Nvidia's challenges, the company's share price dropped significantly following the announcement of the Chinese AI model DeepSeek, which poses a potential threat to Nvidia's datacenter GPU sales. This may further impact the allocation of resources and potentially exacerbate the consumer GPU shortages.
