"Maximize EXP Gain in Persona 5 Royal"

Author : Carter Update:Mar 29,2025

Quick Links

In the world of Persona 5 Royal, leveling up is essential for overcoming the game's challenging bosses and avoiding tedious grinding in Mementos. As an enhanced version of Persona 5, Persona 5 Royal introduces numerous quality-of-life improvements and adds 20 hours of new content, including an additional semester for the Phantom Thieves and revamped boss fights. To fully enjoy the new content and maintain a competitive edge, it's crucial to keep your team's levels high and understand the most efficient ways to gain experience.

Updated on January 13, 2025 by Renri Seong: While being over-leveled can make the game too easy, matching the level of Palace Rulers is essential, especially on a new save file. Persona 5 Royal offers several methods to make experience farming more manageable, from leveraging Confidant Skills to utilizing Jose in Mementos. Additionally, Joker can earn EXP for his non-active Personas with a specific passive skill. This guide has been updated to include a new section on quickly farming experience using the Insta-kill ability.

Accessories and The Moon Arcana

Mishima Yuuki's Confidant

In Persona 5 Royal, players can enhance their EXP gain by equipping Team Glasses, a free DLC accessory available from the PlayStation Store. These glasses boost EXP by 15% when worn by each character in battle. However, only four Phantom Thieves, including Joker, can participate in battle at once, leaving the others on the backline to receive less experience.

To ensure that backup members also benefit from increased EXP, players should focus on ranking up the Moon Confidant, Yuuki Mishima. Reaching Rank 3 and Rank 5 allows backup team members to gain more EXP, and achieving Rank 10 ensures they receive the same amount as those on the front lines. Building a strong relationship with Mishima is straightforward; just choose dialogue options that resonate with him and bring a Persona of the Moon Arcana when spending time with him. Additionally, completing Mementos Missions assigned by Mishima is now crucial for advancing his Confidant.

Mementos: Increase EXP Gain

Cognition of Mementos

Persona 5 Royal introduces Jose, a character who, while not central to the plot, significantly aids gameplay. Within Mementos, players can collect "flowers" and visit "Stamp Stations," which can be traded with Jose for various benefits. One of these benefits is altering the Cognition of Mementos, allowing players to increase EXP gains. In Jose's shop, you can opt to boost EXP from battles to 110% for 5 Stamps or up to 200% for 12 Stamps. To maximize EXP Up, you'll need 85 out of the total 165 Stamps available in the game. These Stamp Stations are hidden in "dead ends" behind breakable walls on each floor of Mementos, and Jose may appear when you transition to a new floor.

Fight the Reaper

What Level is the Reaper?

The Reaper, a formidable enemy in the Persona series, appears in Mementos when players linger too long on a floor. Signs of the Reaper's approach include a blinking red screen, the sound of chains, and warnings from Morgana or Futaba about an ominous presence. Early in the game, defeating the Reaper is nearly impossible without a New Game+ file, as it wields powerful -dyne tier spells and Support skills like Concentrate and elemental Breaks.

The Reaper is level 85 with exceptionally high stats, though its Agility, at 75, is its lowest attribute. Successfully defeating it rewards a substantial amount of experience and money, often resulting in level-ups for all characters. For the best chance of victory, it's recommended to engage the Reaper at level 60 or higher, equipped with Defense-raising Support skills and Makarakarn to reflect its magic. Alternatively, using Izanagi-no-Okami (Picaro) from the Persona DLC, players can stack Concentrate, Heat Riser, and use Myriad Truths for heavy Almighty damage.

Defeat Treasure Demons

How to Summon Treasure Demons

Treasure Demons, unique Shadows introduced in Madarame's Palace, become more common in the Metaverse after their initial appearance. Unlike regular Shadows, these harmless entities will attempt to flee after a few turns. Each type of Treasure Demon has specific Affinity Weaknesses and Immunities, but all are vulnerable to Almighty attacks.

To prevent them from escaping, players can use Shinya's Rank 1 Ability, Down Shot, to down them and execute an All-Out Attack. Another strategy involves using high-crit attacks like Morgana's Miracle Punch, provided the Treasure Demon doesn't nullify Physical attacks. Treasure Demons are more likely to appear when Palace security is high, and crafting the Treasure Trap infiltration tool with 2x Silk Yarn, 3x Plant Balm, and 1x Cork Bark increases their encounter rate.

Use Persona with EXP Skills

How to Get Growth Passive Skill

In Persona 5 Royal, any Persona not equipped by Joker at the end of a battle typically doesn't earn EXP. However, equipping a Persona with the Growth Passive Skill allows it to gain a percentage of EXP even when not in use. There are three levels of Growth Skills:

  • Growth 1: Persona gains a quarter EXP when inactive.
  • Growth 2: Persona gains half EXP when inactive.
  • Growth 3: Persona will gain full EXP when inactive.

Several Personas naturally learn Growth at different levels:

  • Growth 1: Saki Mitama (level 7), Koppa Tengu (level 12)
  • Growth 2: Lachesis (Innate), Kurama Tengu (level 36), Thoth (level 42), Ananta (level 47)
  • Growth 3: Izanagi (level 25), Izanagi Picaro (level 28), Narcissus (level 50), Raphael (level 81)

Once the Electric Chair is unlocked in the Velvet Room, players can convert Personas into Skill Cards. However, in Persona 5 Royal, only Izanagi Picaro can be turned into a Growth 3 Skill Card. Growth 1 Skill Cards are unavailable, but Growth 2 Skill Cards can be obtained by taking Caroline and Justine to Miura Beach between September 2nd and September 29th, after clearing event 6 (Sky Tower).

Ryuji Sakamoto's Confidant

How to Unlock Insta-Kill

Insta-kill is a powerful ability that allows Joker to instantly defeat Shadows without engaging in battle, provided he ambushes them and his level is at least 10 levels higher than the Shadow's. In Persona 5 Royal, a successful Insta-kill not only defeats the Shadow but also rewards items, yen, experience, and potentially a new Persona.

To identify Shadows vulnerable to Insta-kill, use Joker's Third Eye ability; those with a green outline are susceptible. To unlock Insta-kill, advance Ryuji Sakamoto's Confidant to Rank 7. Ryuji's Confidant is one of the easiest to max out, with no Social Stat requirements. To expedite the process, spend time with Ryuji and select the most favorable dialogue options to maximize relationship points. It's advisable to focus on this before unlocking other Confidants.
