On January 19, TikTok, the popular social media platform, temporarily halted its operations in the United States, causing an unexpected ripple effect on Marvel Snap, a renowned card game developed by Second Dinner Studios and published by Nuverse, a ByteDance subsidiary. Marvel Snap, closely linked to TikTok's parent company, was offline for a full 24 hours due to this blockage.
Although the game has since resumed service, full functionality has not yet been restored; in-game purchases remain unavailable. In response to this disruption, the developers are contemplating a change in publishers and are considering shifting some services to internal resources, as stated in an official announcement on Platform X.
The underlying cause of these measures is the political risk associated with TikTok's operations. The company was granted a mere 90-day extension to divest 50% of its business to a local owner. Should this deal collapse, TikTok and its related ventures, including Marvel Snap, could face further blockages.
Second Dinner Studios has promised to provide further updates on the situation. Despite the game's return, numerous players have reported issues with authorization, though PC users can still access the game via Steam. The developers at Second Dinner expressed their surprise at the incident and are diligently working to fully restore the game's services. An official statement from Platform X reaffirmed their commitment:
“Marvel Snap is here to stay. We're working hard to restore the game as quickly as possible, and we'll keep players informed of our progress”.
A significant point of frustration for players was the lack of prior notification about the potential service interruption. Many continued to make in-game purchases, unaware of the looming lockout.
