Mastering Targeting in Hyper Light Breaker: Lock-On vs. Free Cam
Hyper Light Breaker's mechanics are shrouded in mystery, leaving players to unravel effective strategies. One crucial element is the lock-on targeting system. While useful in specific scenarios, it's not always the optimal approach. This guide clarifies how to use the lock-on and when to prioritize it over the default free camera mode.
How to Target Enemies
To lock onto an enemy, center your view on your target and press the right analog stick (R3). The game automatically selects the target unless it's within a dense enemy cluster. A reticle will appear, and the camera will zoom slightly.
Line of sight isn't required; the enemy simply needs to be visible on-screen and within targeting range.
Locking on alters character movement and camera behavior. The camera follows your target, causing your movements to often circle them. This can be disorienting with fast-moving enemies, potentially altering your input direction as the camera shifts.
To switch targets while locked on, use the right analog stick to select the nearest enemy within range. Pressing the right analog stick again cancels the lock-on, reverting to the default third-person camera view. The lock-on also automatically disengages if you move too far from your target.
Lock-On vs. Free Cam: When to Use Each
Lock-on excels in one-on-one encounters, especially against bosses or strong (yellow health bar) enemies – but only after eliminating other mobs. The focused camera leaves you vulnerable to attacks from enemies outside your immediate view.
For most situations, free cam is superior. Against multiple enemies or weak, easily dispatched foes, lock-on hinders your situational awareness and responsiveness.
Reserve lock-on for mini-boss or boss fights after clearing the surrounding area. Cancel the lock-on if more enemies appear, then re-engage once the boss is isolated.
Consider Extraction encounters: multiple waves of regular enemies precede a mini-boss. Maintain free cam until the smaller enemies are defeated, then lock onto the mini-boss for focused combat.
