PC gaming is largely synonymous with keyboard and mouse controls, especially for genres like first-person shooters and strategy games that benefit from precise aiming and control. However, some PC games are surprisingly better suited to controllers. Games emphasizing reflex-based movement or fast-paced melee combat often feel more natural with a gamepad. This is particularly true for titles originating on consoles before making their way to PC.
While many PC releases strive for robust keyboard and mouse support, several stand out as exceptional controller experiences. Recent releases like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Infinity Nikki, Marvel Rivals, Path of Exile 2, and Delta Force all performed well with keyboard and mouse, arguably better than with a controller. Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered, however, is arguably slightly better with a gamepad, though the difference isn't significant.
Several upcoming PC games show promise for superior controller play, though this remains to be seen:
- Freedom Wars Remastered: A PS Vita port following the Monster Hunter formula, likely best enjoyed with a controller.
- Tales of Graces f Remastered: The Tales series consistently benefits from gamepad controls, suggesting this remaster will follow suit.
- Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Given the similar combat system to its predecessor, a controller is likely preferable on PC.
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: A PS5 port to PC, often indicating a controller-centric design, although keyboard and mouse may still be viable.
A 2024 Soulslike game has also been added to this list. See below for details.
