Monster Hunter Wilds: Unveiling the Oilwell Basin and its Fiery Inhabitants
In an exclusive interview with IGN, Monster Hunter Wilds directors Yuya Tokuda and Kaname Fujioka showcased the game's newest locale: the Oilwell Basin, and its fearsome ruler, the Nu Udra. This unique environment offers a vertical gameplay experience, a departure from the series' typical horizontal landscapes.
Delving into the Oilwell Basin
Fujioka describes the Basin's vertical structure, progressing from oil-slick swamps at the surface to magma-filled depths. Tokuda adds that the environment transforms dramatically during the "Plenty" event, shifting into an underwater volcanic ecosystem reminiscent of Monster Hunter World's Coral Highlands. This transformation extends to the unique flora and fauna, hinting at a vibrant ecosystem beneath the seemingly barren surface.
Nu Udra: The Black Flame Apex Predator
The Oilwell Basin's apex predator, Nu Udra, is a colossal, octopus-like creature with a flammable, slimy body. Its design, inspired by a desire to incorporate a tentacled monster, blends aquatic characteristics with demonic aesthetics. Its combat style is characterized by swift, multi-tentacle attacks, both single-target and area-of-effect, and immunity to Flash Bombs. Its unique battle theme further enhances its menacing presence.
Additional Oilwell Basin Inhabitants
Beyond Nu Udra, the Basin harbors other formidable creatures. The Ajarakan, a fiery, monkey-like monster, utilizes martial arts-inspired combat. The Rompopolo, a globular monster with needle-like mouthparts, employs toxic gases. Finally, Gravio, a returning monster from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, fits seamlessly into the volcanic environment.
With its diverse cast of monsters and unique environment, the Oilwell Basin promises an exciting addition to Monster Hunter Wilds, launching February 28th.
