The announcement of the development of Space Marine 3 sent ripples of excitement and concern throughout the Warhammer 40,000 community. Just six months after the release of Space Marine 2, publisher Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive made this surprising reveal in mid-March, amidst ongoing discussions about the future content for Space Marine 2.
In a recent blog post, both companies addressed the community's concerns head-on, assuring players that Space Marine 2 would continue to receive full support. They emphasized that the development of Space Marine 3 does not signify the end of Space Marine 2. "So let us set the record straight: Space Marine 3 does not mean the end of Space Marine 2's development. Far from it. No teams are shifting over, no one is abandoning the game, and our plans to bring more awesome content to Space Marine 2 remain," the statement clarified.
The roadmap for Space Marine 2's first year is still in place, with Patch 7 slated for release in mid-April. Players can look forward to exciting additions, including a new class, new PvE operations, and new melee weapons. The developers teased, "Trust us, there are surprises even dataminers haven’t found out about :)." This announcement marks the beginning of a new project, Space Marine 3, which is years away from release.
The community is buzzing with speculation about the new class and melee weapon for Space Marine 2. Many believe the new class could be the Apothecary, akin to a medic class, while others hope for the Librarian, which would introduce warp-powered space magic to the game. As for the new melee weapon, fans have expressed interest in seeing the iconic axe featured in Secret Level’s Warhammer 40,000 animated episode, with some modders already bringing this to life.
The decision to move forward with Space Marine 3 aligns with the success of Space Marine 2. In an interview with IGN following Space Marine 2's launch, Saber Interactive's Chief Creative Officer Tim Willits mentioned the potential for story DLC and hinted at ideas for Space Marine 3. Without revealing too much about Space Marine 2's campaign, Willits suggested a continuation, and IGN has reported on the likely enemy faction for Space Marine 3. Willits stated, "Our game director Dmitry Grigorenko, he has proposed some story ideas that could either be DLC or a sequel. Yes, yes, yes! There's so many different factions... there are other chapters, too, that are interesting..."
