The latest teaser for Thunderbolts has ignited a fervent debate among Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fans regarding the fate of Taskmaster. Initially featured in the September 2024 trailer standing between Ghost and U.S. Agent in the Watchtower scene, Taskmaster's noticeable absence in the new teaser has left fans puzzled and speculating.
In the new teaser, the same scene is shown, but Taskmaster is conspicuously missing. This change, coupled with the recent announcement of the Avengers: Doomsday cast, which included Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman, but notably omitted Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster's actress), has led many to believe that Taskmaster may not survive Thunderbolts.
The removal of Taskmaster from the scene and the absence of Kurylenko from the Avengers: Doomsday cast have sparked numerous theories. Some fans suggest Marvel might be engaging in a double-bluff, while others believe the studio is still finalizing the character's role in the larger narrative. Additionally, the positioning of the characters in the new teaser is slightly different, leading to speculation that Sentry might have 'deleted' Taskmaster, a power he's demonstrated in other parts of the trailer.
"Marvel pretty much just sealed the fate of this character in the movie," remarked redditor Matapple13. "Yesterday they announced Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen and Lewis Pullman in the Avengers: Doomsday cast, but Olga Kurylenko (Taskmaster's actress) was blatantly absent, and now, Marvel posts this..."
On the other hand, some fans, like puckallday, believe there could be a twist in store: "The amount of people saying she’s dying and Marvel seemingly leaning into that by barely showing her make me think there's a reveal there with her in the movie and that she lives."
Sentry's immense power is highlighted in the teaser, with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) stating he is "stronger than all of the Avengers rolled into one." This has led to theories that Taskmaster could have been easily dispatched by Sentry, perhaps even sent to the void.
The MCU continues to be a hotbed of activity, with Thunderbolts set to premiere in May 2025, followed by the TV show Ironheart in June, and the start of Phase 6 with The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July. Avengers: Doomsday is slated for May 1, 2026, with Secret Wars following in May 2027. As the MCU unfolds, fans eagerly await to see if Marvel and Robert Downey Jr. have more surprises in store, including the possibility of Taskmaster's return.
