2024: A Year of Exceptional Comics
In 2024, readers found comfort in familiar narratives, but this year's offerings transcended the ordinary, pushing creative boundaries. Navigating the sheer volume of weekly comics from major publishers, plus the diverse graphic novels available, is a daunting task. This list highlights some of 2024's standout titles.
A Few Notes:
- Focus is primarily on Marvel and DC, with a few exceptions.
- Only series with at least 10 issues are included. This excludes newer titles like Ultimates, Absolute Batman, recent X-titles, and Aaron's Ninja Turtles.
- The ranking considers all issues of each series, regardless of release year, including those from earlier runs. Exceptions are Jed McKay's Moon Knight and Joshua Williamson's Robin.
- Anthologies like Action Comics and Batman: The Brave and the Bold are excluded due to their multiple authors.
Table of Contents

- Nightwing by Tom Taylor
- Blade + Blade: Red Band

Batman: Zdarsky Run
While technically impressive, this Batman story felt ultimately boring and unremarkable, except for a compelling neuro-arc with the Joker.
Nightwing by Tom Taylor
Had the series concluded earlier, it would have ranked higher. Unfortunately, later issues became bogged down with filler. Despite its flaws, it contained moments of brilliance.
Blade + Blade: Red Band
This comic successfully captured the essence of a bloody action movie, perfectly fitting the Daywalker's persona.
Vengeance of the Moon Knight + Moon Knight: Fist of Khonshu
Moon Knight's resurrection felt rushed, hindering character development. Hopefully, future installments will rectify this.
Outsiders
A reimagining of Planetary within the DC Universe, this series uses meta-commentary, though it becomes predictable. However, it stands on its own merits.
Poison Ivy
This surprisingly long-running series maintains a unique psychedelic charm, despite its inconsistencies.
Batman and Robin by Joshua Williamson
Williamson's return to Damien Wayne explores themes of growing up and father-son relationships, making for an enjoyable read.
Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver
This Dark Horse comic is a charming and beautifully rendered story, focusing on simplicity and heartwarming moments.
The Flash Series by Simon Spurrier
A complex and challenging read, rewarding those willing to invest the effort, but its narrative path remains unpredictable.
The Immortal Thor by Al Ewing
While potentially tedious for some, Ewing's intricate storytelling and beautiful artwork keep the reader engaged, despite the heavy reliance on previous works.
Venom + Venom War
A chaotic and exhilarating read, leaving a lasting impact.
John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America
The UK portion is a masterpiece, while the US section feels less compelling. Despite its flaws, Spurrier's portrayal of Constantine remains brilliant.
Ultimate X-men by Peach Momoko
A unique blend of manga, psychological horror, and the X-Men, beautifully illustrated by Peach Momoko.
