Project Zomboid: How to Board Up Windows

Author : Ellie Update:Jan 09,2025

In the zombie-infested world of Project Zomboid, securing your shelter is paramount. While finding a safe haven is relatively straightforward, protecting it from the relentless undead hordes presents a different challenge. This guide focuses on a fundamental defensive measure: barricading windows.

How to Secure Your Windows in Project Zomboid

To effectively board up your windows, you'll need specific materials: a wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Once you've gathered these items, simply right-click the target window. Your character will automatically begin securing the plank. Each window can support up to four planks for enhanced protection.

Resource locations are fairly intuitive: hammers and nails are commonly found in toolboxes, garages, sheds, and closets. Wooden planks are frequently located at construction sites, or can be salvaged by dismantling wooden furniture like shelves and chairs in a pinch. Administrators can utilize the "/additem" command to spawn items directly.

Barricaded windows significantly hinder zombie access compared to unprotected windows. The more planks you add, the more time it takes for the undead to breach your defenses. To remove planks, right-click the boards and select "Remove." Note that you'll need a claw hammer or crowbar to accomplish this.

Larger furniture items, such as bookshelves or refrigerators, are ineffective as window barriers; characters and zombies will simply pass through them. However, understanding how to move furniture remains a valuable skill for interior arrangement.

While wooden planks offer a basic defense, stronger barricades can be constructed using metal bars or sheets, though this requires sufficient Metalworking skill.
