Remember Project Mugen, the highly anticipated urban open-world RPG developed by Naked Rain and published by NetEase? Well, there's a significant update: Project Mugen has officially been renamed to Ananta. This RPG was first unveiled back in August 2023 at Gamescom, and after a long period of silence, the team has finally released a new trailer. They've promised more details on December 5th, but for now, you can check out the official trailer for Project Mugen/Ananta.
Why the Name Change?
The developers haven't provided any specific reasons for the name change yet. Interestingly, Ananta means "infinite" in Sanskrit, which aligns well with the original name, Mugen, also meaning "infinite." The Chinese name further supports this theme of infinity. The gaming community has mixed feelings about the rebranding, but there's a collective sigh of relief knowing that the project is still alive and kicking.
Meanwhile, gamers are already comparing Ananta to another upcoming RPG, Neverness to Everness by Hotta Studio. While Ananta's new trailer is visually stunning, it doesn't showcase any gameplay, leaving Neverness to Everness with a perceived edge for some. Personally, I find Project Mugen/Ananta to be more visually appealing.
Here’s Where Things Get Weird, Though
In a surprising move, Team Project Mugen has deleted all their original social media accounts, including a YouTube channel that boasted over 100k subscribers and videos with millions of views. They've retained their Discord server and simply renamed it, but for all other platforms, they've started anew. This decision has left many gamers puzzled, as they could have easily just renamed the existing accounts.
In Project Mugen or Ananta, you step into the shoes of an Infinite Trigger, a supernatural investigator tasked with managing paranormal chaos. The game features a diverse cast of characters, including Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila.
