Exciting news for fans of the iconic franchise: a live-action Power Rangers series is reportedly in the works for Disney+. According to The Wrap, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, the showrunners behind the successful Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, are in discussions to helm this new project with 20th Century TV. This move signals a fresh take on the beloved series, aiming to captivate both new audiences and long-time fans alike.
Hasbro, the current owner of the Power Rangers franchise, is keen on reimagining the series for today's viewers while ensuring it remains true to the essence that has endeared it to millions. The '90s classic, The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, was a staple for a generation, with its teenage superheroes and their impressive mechs that could combine into an even larger mech, becoming a cultural phenomenon.
In 2018, Hasbro acquired Power Rangers and other brands from Saban Properties in a deal valued at $522 million. Brian Goldner, Hasbro's chairman and CEO at the time, highlighted the "tremendous upside potential" of the franchise, envisioning its expansion across toys, games, consumer products, digital gaming, and entertainment on a global scale.
This acquisition followed the underwhelming performance of the 2017 Power Rangers movie reboot, which attempted a darker, grittier approach intended to launch a series of sequels. However, the film's poor box office results led to the cancellation of those plans, prompting Saban to sell the franchise to Hasbro.
Hasbro's ambitious plans extend beyond Power Rangers. They are also developing a live-action Dungeons & Dragons series titled The Forgotten Realms for Netflix, an animated Magic: The Gathering series, and a cinematic universe for the same franchise, indicating a robust strategy to expand their intellectual properties across various media platforms.
