Sony is set to expand its presence in the family gaming genre, buoyed by the remarkable success of Astro Bot. Released in September 2024, Astro Bot has not only sold over 1.5 million copies but also clinched the coveted Game of the Year title at The Game Awards 2024. This triumph has sparked Sony's interest in further developing games tailored for family audiences.
Astro Bot Sold Over 1.5 Million Copies
Astro Bot's success story was highlighted during Sony's Q3 Earnings Announcement on February 13, 2025, where Sony President, CEO, and CFO Hiroki Totoki discussed the game's achievements. Astro Bot swept four categories at The Game Awards 2024, including Game of the Year and Best Family Game. Totoki also praised the success of Helldivers 2, which won Best Ongoing Game and Best Multiplayer Game. He emphasized that the recognition of these titles aligns with Sony's strategic goal to diversify its gaming portfolio, particularly in the family and live service genres.
Family Genre Titles Under PlayStation
PlayStation has a rich history with family-friendly titles, though many have not seen new entries in recent years. Notable series like Sly Cooper, Ape Escape, and Jak and Daxter have been dormant for over a decade. Meanwhile, iconic franchises like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon have shifted to Xbox. The recent focus has been on Ratchet & Clank, Little Big Planet, and now Astro Bot. In a December 2024 interview with Famitsu, PlayStation Studios CEO Hermen Hulst underscored Astro Bot's significance to Sony, praising the small team's ability to create a game that celebrates PlayStation's legacy.
Possibility Of Legacy IPs Returning
Astro Bot's integration of various PlayStation IPs hints at Sony's interest in reviving dormant franchises. Hulst emphasized the value of Sony's extensive IP portfolio, suggesting a potential resurgence of classic titles. The recent trailer for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater featured the return of Ape Escape monkeys, while Sly Cooper's success on PlayStation Plus’ Classics Catalog indicates a continuing interest in these legacy IPs. Though no official announcements have been made, these developments suggest that PlayStation may revisit its family-friendly titles.
