Recent Nintendo filings have ignited excitement among fans, hinting at a possible new GameCube controller for playing classic GameCube titles on the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service, potentially on the upcoming Switch 2. As reported by Nintendo Life, a new FCC filing by Nintendo for a "game controller," consistent with the Switch 2 specifications, suggests a wireless Bluetooth controller.
Further investigation by Famiboards revealed that an image within the filing shows a label location matching the back of a GameCube controller, specifically behind the C-Stick.

Although this could be a new Switch 2 Pro Controller, current speculation points towards its use with Nintendo's Switch Online service, which already utilizes wireless classic controllers for retro gaming. This fuels anticipation for a potential GameCube game library on Nintendo Switch Online. While Nintendo has previously added NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy games to the service, a significant addition of GameCube classics via the Switch 2 remains a highly sought-after feature among fans.
Nintendo Consoles
The Switch 2 was unveiled earlier in January with a brief trailer confirming backwards compatibility and the addition of a second USB-C port. Many details, including its game lineup and the function of a mysterious new Joy-Con button, remain undisclosed, although theories surrounding a Joy-Con mouse have gained traction.
A recent Nintendo patent suggested the Switch 2's Joy-Cons could attach upside down, utilizing gyro mechanics similar to smartphones without screen lock. Unlike the original Switch's rail system, the new controllers employ magnets for attachment on either side. This design allows for flexible button placement and could potentially unlock unique gameplay mechanics.
