After a tense few days, Second Dinner's popular card game, Marvel Snap, is back online in the United States. The game faced a brief outage due to the TikTok ban affecting its publisher, ByteDance. However, the developer was seemingly left in the dark about the sudden decision to halt service, which included a stark "banned" message displayed to players.
As Second Dinner continues to manage the fallout and respond to player concerns, they've made a significant announcement: they are now actively seeking a new publisher. This development is a major blow to the current publisher, Nuverse, a ByteDance subsidiary, especially after the successful launch of Marvel Snap in 2022, which combined beloved Marvel heroes with engaging card battles.
By now, many of you have likely read my opinion piece on this topic (and if you haven't, what are you waiting for?). I highlighted that ByteDance's abrupt decision to pull down both TikTok and several of its gaming titles without adequate warning could have, and indeed has, backfired.
Second Dinner has every reason to be frustrated, as evident from the flood of complaints on their social media about missed log-in rewards and disrupted event gameplay. Their decision to seek a new publisher underscores the depth of their discontent with the recent events.
It might take months or even years to secure a new publisher, but in the meantime, the hope is to avoid a repeat of this incident.
