Konami Announces a Suikoden Game for Mobile Called Suikoden STAR LEAP

The beloved Suikoden series is making a comeback, sort of. Konami and MYTHRIL have unveiled Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG for Android and iOS platforms. This free-to-play title is slated for release later this year, though a precise date remains unannounced.

For the uninitiated, Suikoden, initially launched in 1995, is a celebrated RPG series developed and published by Konami under the creative direction of Yoshitaka Murayama. Loosely inspired by the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, the series—known as Suikoden in Japanese—has captivated players with its intricate political narratives, the mystical True Runes, and the legendary 108 Stars of Destiny. Eleven installments, including spin-offs, have graced the gaming world, the last arriving in 2012. Instead of a direct sequel or a full-scale reboot, Konami is offering Suikoden STAR LEAP as a mobile gaming experience.

The narrative centers on the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes that supposedly shaped the world. The protagonist, Hou, the son of a village chief, embarks on a journey with Hisui, Shirin, and Shapur after a devastating attack on his village. Hisui is his mysterious servant, Shirin a childhood friend with a strong moral compass, and Shapur a former general now serving as his butler.

The game's reception within the community is mixed. Longtime fans, yearning for a proper continuation of the main storyline, express some reservations about STAR LEAP's gacha mechanics.
