Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has exciting news for fans of the Like a Dragon series: a free demo for Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii is set to launch today. Gamers can dive into this thrilling spin-off on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC via Steam. The demo will be available for download starting at 7am Pacific / 10am Eastern / 3pm UK, as announced by the studio on X/Twitter.
While the full game will hit the shelves on February 21 and will also be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, these platforms will miss out on the free demo experience. Although it's unclear if progress from the demo will carry over to the full game, the demo's structure suggests it won't. Players can jump directly into specific freeroam and battle areas, which do not align with the game's initial storyline.
The demo offers a taste of the action, allowing players to freely explore parts of Honolulu and Madlantis, areas not accessible at the start of the full game. Gamers can switch between the Mad Dog and Sea Dog fighting styles, engage in battles against formidable bounty enemies, and participate in four ship and deck battles at the Pirates' Coliseum. Additionally, the demo introduces new customization features and side activities, including karaoke with a selection of three songs.
Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii serves as a spin-off sequel to Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, the eighth mainline entry in the Yakuza / Like a Dragon series (or ninth, including Yakuza 0). This installment follows the journey of Goro Majima, who awakens with amnesia and embarks on a pirate's life across Hawaii.
A trailer unveiled at the October Xbox Partner Showcase provided the first glimpse of ship combat reminiscent of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag and hinted at the return of the fan-favorite character Taiga Saejima, suggesting deeper connections to the main series.
With an estimated playtime of 15 to 18 hours, Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii promises to be longer than the previous spin-off, Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name. Fans eager to see Majima dressed as the iconic series protagonist Kiryu Kazuma can do so by signing up for email notifications or participating in the Sega reward system.
