It appears that the DCU movie The Authority is facing challenges, as confirmed by DC Studios co-chief James Gunn. Announced as part of the ambitious Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters reboot of the DC Universe two years ago, The Authority was intended to be a significant project focusing on the brutal superhero team from the WildStorm Universe. However, during a recent DC Studios presentation attended by IGN, Gunn revealed that the film has been placed on the "back burner."
Gunn cited several reasons for the difficulties surrounding The Authority. He mentioned the evolving overarching narrative of the DC Universe and the need to ensure the film fits well within a landscape that already includes successful adaptations like Amazon's The Boys, which shares thematic similarities with The Authority. Additionally, Gunn highlighted the challenge of integrating new characters into a universe where audiences have already formed attachments to existing characters whose stories are ongoing.
Despite these setbacks, one character from The Authority, The Engineer / Angela Spica, is set to appear in the upcoming DCU film Superman. The Engineer, known for her technological prowess and abilities such as self-duplication and technopathy, represents a significant connection between The Authority and the broader DCU.
The Authority isn't the only project facing hurdles within Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. Gunn also mentioned that Waller, a spinoff of the HBO Max series Peacemaker, has experienced "a couple of setbacks." However, not all projects are struggling; the HBO Max series Booster Gold is reportedly "going pretty strong," and Paradise Lost remains a priority with its pilot currently in development.
Regarding Swamp Thing, DC Studios is taking a patient approach. They are waiting for acclaimed director James Mangold, who is currently working on other projects including A Complete Unknown and the upcoming Star Wars movie Dawn of the Jedi, to be ready to helm the film. Safran emphasized that Swamp Thing is not crucial to the larger DCU narrative, a point Gunn echoed, noting that the project was brought to them by Mangold himself.
