Sid Meier's Civilization 7 is set to revolutionize the franchise with its VR version, slated for release this Spring 2025. Dive into the details about the features of Civ 7 VR and the latest updates on Civ 7.
Civilization 7 Coming to VR This Spring 2025
Civilization 7 VR Exclusively on Meta Quest 3
Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) is making its debut in the world of virtual and mixed reality exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. The announcement came from 2K Games and Firaxis Games during the Civ World Summit Event on February 8, 2025. This marks the franchise's first venture into VR gaming.
Civ 7 Executive Franchise Producer Dennis Shirk expressed his enthusiasm on 2K's official blog, stating, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!
Meta Director of Games Chris Pruett also shared his optimism about Civ 7 VR, saying, With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.
Notably, while Civ 7 is available on PlayStation consoles, the VR version will not be released on PSVR2.
Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer
Civ 7 VR introduces a unique Command Table feature, allowing players to navigate the game world as if they were playing a tabletop game. Players can zoom in to inspect the details of buildings and units or take a broader view of the entire map.
The game supports both immersive virtual reality and mixed reality, with seamless switching between modes. In VR, players find themselves in a museum-like setting, while in MR, the Command Table integrates with the player's real-world environment.
Civ 7 VR offers various multiplayer options, including single-player, co-op, and competitive modes. Up to four players can join a game using Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets, with the option to include AI opponents. Players can collaborate or compete as their chosen world leaders, with online multiplayer requiring a 2K Account and a Meta Account.
Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback
Firaxis Games has actively responded to feedback received during Civ 7’s early access period, which began on February 6, 2025, for Deluxe Edition and Founder’s Edition buyers. The game has garnered mixed reviews on Steam, with players highlighting issues with the User Interface, particularly its impact on accessing crucial gameplay information.
In response, Firaxis Games has committed to improving the UI, making interactions more intuitive, enhancing map readability, and addressing formatting issues. They also plan to introduce community-requested features such as team-based multiplayer, a variety of map types, and more. A quality-of-life update is scheduled for March, focusing on UI adjustments, AI balance, diplomacy and crisis adjustments, and additional bug fixes.
Civilization 7 VR is anticipated to launch in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, though a specific release date has not been announced. Meanwhile, Civilization 7 is currently in early access and will see its worldwide release on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
