Hollow Knight Fans’ Hope for Silksong Reignited
By a Twitter Post and a Piece of Cake
The Hollow Knight community was thrown into a frenzy of speculation once again, sparked by the actions of one of the game's creators, William Pellen, on Twitter (now known as X) around the time of the Switch 2 reveal on January 16, 2025.
On January 15, Pellen teased fans with a tweet stating, "something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow." This cryptic message was likely a nod to the anticipated Switch 2 reveal the following day. Naturally, fans immediately began questioning whether this could mean news about Silksong. Pellen's subsequent actions only added fuel to the fire.
On the day of the Switch 2 announcement, January 16, 2025, which also revealed an upcoming Nintendo Direct on April 2, 2025, Pellen changed his Twitter profile picture to a slice of cake. A reverse image search revealed that the image was from a Bon Appetit article about the Brooklyn Blackout Cake, published on April 2, 2024.
Pellen also left a comment on the article saying "mmmm tasty," which led dedicated fans to delve into the comments section. There, they found discussions about Silksong, with one fan even challenging, "if we get real silksong news by April 2nd 2025, I will bake this cake." Another fan praised the cake's "silky texture," cleverly linking it to the game and the upcoming Nintendo Direct.
While it's impossible to confirm if Pellen was the one who commented on the cake recipe, his profile picture change is undeniable. It suggests he might be hinting at something, though it could also be a playful misdirection.
Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Official Announcement Five Years Ago
Hollow Knight: Silksong was first announced on February 14, 2019, with plans to release on multiple platforms including Nintendo Switch, PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. This sequel to Hollow Knight follows the adventures of Hornet in a new kingdom ruled by silk and song.
In December 2019, Team Cherry offered a glimpse into Hollow Knight’s enchanting soundtrack, composed by Christopher Larkin. Following this, the development team went quiet for over two years.
The silence was broken in February 2022 when Pellen reassured fans that the game was still in development, promising that more information would be shared as the release date approached. By June of that year, Team Cherry unveiled a new trailer during the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase, showcasing fresh gameplay and confirming that the game would be available on Game Pass upon launch.
Originally anticipated for a 2023 release, Team Cherry's representative Matthew Griffin announced a delay in May 2023, stating, "We had planned to release in the 1st half of 2023, but development is still continuing. We're excited by how the game is shaping up, and it's gotten quite big, so we want to take the time to make the game as good as we can."
Even after more than five years, the Hollow Knight fanbase remains vibrant and engaged, actively participating in community forums and eagerly seeking any updates on Silksong. However, since the delay announcement, little new information has been shared, aside from assurances that the development team is still hard at work.
