Matajuegos has exciting news for fans of innovative gaming: their surrealist documentary game, Atuel, is set to launch on PC and Android later this year. Eager players can already pre-register on the game's Steam page, with Google Play pre-registration expected to follow soon.
Originating from the Argentine indie co-op Matajuegos, Atuel first debuted on itch.io in September 2022, quickly gaining acclaim for its unique fusion of documentary storytelling, experimental gameplay, and captivating dreamlike visuals. The game's originality earned it the 'Innovation in Experience Design Award' at IndieCade 2022, along with numerous other accolades. Atuel has also been showcased at prestigious venues like the Marché du Film at Cannes and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
Curious about Atuel? Here's a sneak peek:
What Do You Do in Atuel, the Documentary Game?
Atuel immerses players in the stunning yet climate-affected Atuel River Valley in Argentina. This game transcends traditional gameplay by allowing players to shapeshift into various animals and elements of the ecosystem, becoming an integral part of the landscape. One moment you could be soaring through the skies, the next flowing as the river itself. The game also features real-life interviews with historians, biologists, geologists, and local residents, who discuss the region's history, its current state, and the looming impact of climate change.
In collaboration with the international documentary team, The 12.01 Project, Matajuegos brings these compelling stories to life. The visuals, inspired by the Cuyo desert, lend the game an almost otherworldly feel.
While awaiting Android pre-registration, interested players can explore the Steam page or visit the official website for more information. Once Atuel arrives on mobile, it will feature localization in seven new languages and full controller support.
