MultiVersus to Conclude Operations After Season 5
Warner Bros. Games has announced the impending closure of MultiVersus, effective May 30, 2025, following the completion of its fifth and final season. The news, revealed via the official Twitter (X) account and a blog post, confirms that Season 5 will be the game's last content update.
Season 5: A Final Farewell
Launching February 4, 2025, and running until May 30, 2025, Season 5 will introduce two highly anticipated characters: Aquaman (DC) and Lola Bunny (Looney Tunes). Importantly, all Season 5 content, including these new fighters, will be unlockable through gameplay. Once Season 5 concludes, MultiVersus will be removed from the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store. No official reason for the shutdown has been provided.
Offline Play Option
A silver lining for dedicated players: offline local gameplay will remain accessible. To retain this functionality, players must download the latest game version between February 4th and May 30th, 9 AM PST to 9 AM PDT. Upon logging in, a local save file will be created, preserving all earned and purchased content for continued offline solo or multiplayer (up to four players) enjoyment against AI opponents.
Real-money transactions ceased on January 31, 2025. Any remaining Gleamium (in-game currency) can be used until Season 5's end.
A Short but Memorable Run
Initially launching in July 2022 as a public beta, MultiVersus quickly gained popularity as a free-to-play platform fighter, drawing comparisons to Super Smash Bros. A relaunch in May 2024 introduced new features, including characters, rollback netcode, and a PvE mode. Despite these enhancements, challenges persisted, including technical issues and player dissatisfaction with microtransactions. Reported player count drops further contributed to the decision.
At its closure, MultiVersus will boast a roster of 35 playable characters. Player First Games and Warner Bros. expressed gratitude for the community's support. The game will remain available for download until May 30, 2025, on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
