Xbox to launch AA games based on AAA franchises

Microsoft and Activision Blizzard's New Venture: AA Games from AAA IPs

A newly formed team within Blizzard, primarily composed of King employees, is focusing on developing "AA" games based on established Activision Blizzard franchises. This initiative follows Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023, granting access to a vast portfolio of popular IPs including Diablo and World of Warcraft.

This strategic move aims to leverage King's expertise in mobile gaming, known for successes like Candy Crush and Farm Heroes. The focus will likely be on creating smaller-scale, lower-budget games for mobile platforms, a departure from the high-cost AAA titles. King's past experience with mobile adaptations, such as the now-discontinued Crash Bandicoot: On the Run!, provides a precedent for this approach. However, the status of a previously announced Call of Duty mobile game remains uncertain.

Microsoft's ambition extends beyond individual titles. Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, highlighted the crucial role of mobile gaming in Xbox's growth strategy, citing it as the primary driver behind the Activision Blizzard acquisition. This emphasis is further underscored by Microsoft's development of a competing mobile app store to challenge Apple and Google. Spencer anticipates a relatively swift release, suggesting a timeline shorter than several years.

The creation of this new team also reflects a broader industry trend. With escalating AAA game development costs, Microsoft is experimenting with smaller, more agile teams within its larger structure. While details remain scarce, speculation abounds regarding potential projects. These could include scaled-down versions of existing franchises, potentially mirroring the success of mobile adaptations like League of Legends: Wild Rift or Apex Legends Mobile. The possibility of a mobile Overwatch experience is also a strong contender. This strategic shift signals a significant investment in the mobile gaming market and a diversification of development approaches within Microsoft's gaming portfolio.
