Fields of Mistria, from NPC Studio, is celebrated for its well-written characters, engaging dialogue, and thoughtfully crafted romance storylines. But can you actually *go on dates* with the romanceable characters?
The short answer is: not yet, not in the traditional sense. However, having invested over 100 hours in pursuing one particular character, I can confidently say the existing romance system is incredibly rewarding and well worth the $13.99 Steam price tag.
The November 2024 update significantly expanded the romance system. The previous four-heart cap was increased to six, adding a new heart event for each romanceable NPC to mark relationship milestones. These new events, playable cutscenes unlocked at two, four, and six hearts, offer deeper interactions. NPC Studio plans further expansion with eight- and ten-heart events in future updates, though no concrete dates are available beyond the upcoming March 2025 update (which won't include a higher heart cap or new events).

While the lack of traditional dating might initially disappoint, the current romance system shines. The dialogue is rich, realistic, and subtly flirty, creating a satisfyingly romantic atmosphere. Even early events, while seemingly platonic, are open to romantic interpretation, building a strong sense of connection as your relationship progresses. The pacing feels rewarding, even without explicit dates.
The recent update also introduced the Shooting Star Festival, a summer event allowing dates with eligible NPCs (requiring four hearts). You can currently share a stargazing evening with Caldarus, though this doesn't trigger a date at the Summit like other options. This might change with the March 2025 update, which will unlock the dragon's romance questline.
While full-fledged dates aren't currently available, *Fields of Mistria* offers a compelling and deeply satisfying romance experience that will keep players engaged until this feature is implemented.
