Speculation Mounts: A "Summer of Switch 2" in 2025?

Recent reports suggest Nintendo's next-generation console, the Switch 2, may not launch before April 2025. This timeline emerged from discussions with game developers, who reportedly anticipate a release around April or May 2025. This projected launch window aims to avoid competing with other major game releases, potentially including Rockstar Games' highly anticipated "GTA 6," expected in the fall of 2025.

Further fueling the speculation, journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe hinted at a possible Switch 2 announcement before August's end. While Nintendo remains officially silent, the company has confirmed a formal announcement before the end of their fiscal year (March 31, 2025).

Nintendo's Current Switch Performance: A Dip, but Still Strong

Despite a recent dip in Nintendo Switch sales (a 46.4% year-on-year decline in Q1 FY2025), the console maintains significant traction. 2.1 million units were sold in the quarter, building upon the 15.7 million units sold in the fiscal year ending March 2024, exceeding initial sales projections. Furthermore, over 128 million Nintendo Accounts engaged with Switch software in the year leading up to June 2024. This demonstrates continued strong user engagement even as the console nears the end of its life cycle.

Nintendo's strategy remains focused on maximizing both hardware and software sales for the current Switch model throughout the remainder of its lifespan, even with the impending launch of its successor. The company's projection of 13.5 million Switch units sold in FY2025 underscores this commitment. The combination of continued strong engagement with the current Switch and the anticipation surrounding its successor positions Nintendo for a potentially strong year ahead.
